James was the 3rd of 10 children born to Robert Y. Jones & Sara Lou Carson. He was born at Stewart's Creek in Surry Co., NC. Stewart's Creek is a township just west of Mount Airy and just south of Carroll Co., VA.

He was married 1st to Thelma Emma Lavin (1908-1946) who died in New Orleans; her place of burial is not known. She was the mother of his 2 children; a son & daughter. He was married 2nd to Eunice Mae Crook.

Served in the U. S. Navy from 1927 to 1954. His rating was Chief Radio Electrician (CHRELE). During WWII he served on the USS Marabout (AMc-50) a coastal minesweeper. It was tasked with clearing German mines, laid by U-Boats, from the sea lanes approaching Atlantic ports. He was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 1 Dec 1949. He retired in March of 1954.
