Enlisted as a 3rd Corporal on August 9, 1862 at the age of 22. Joined Co. C, 19th Iowa Infantry Regiment on August 18, 1862.

Promoted to 2nd Corporal on March 16, 1863.
Promoted to 1st Corporal on August 16, 1863.

Died of disease on January 29, 1865 at Vicksburg, MS.
