He was the son of Robert NIVEN & Agnes YUILL...christened Presbyterian on 2 Jul 1809 at Rutherglen parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was named after the British Man-of-War, H.M.S. Mars, that his eldest brother, Robert, served on during the Battle of Trafalgar. He married Susan DON & they lived together in Lanark county, Ontario, Canada for a number of years before going their separate ways. Mars finished out his life in Bay county, Michigan while his wife went to live with one of their daughters in Lindsay, Ontario where she spent her remaining days. I was told by a cousin that Mars was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery. I have never found a death record for Mars. In October 2017, I found a listing at Bay County Historical Society's website in their ongoing transcription of sexton's records which gives a burial date of 19 November 1881 in Plot 1 of Birney Cemetery [now Pine Ridge] for Mars Niven [with description: Newen/Niven, Moses.] Cause of death: Bronchitis. Searched micrifim. Found nothing about him being sick or dying in Bay City Evening Press 14-18 Nov 1881. 19-30 Nov issues missing. Search of 17-19 Nov 1881 issues of Bay City Tribune yielded nothing but large areas of many pages had no visible type. 20 Nov through 31 Dec 1881 issues missing. (Bay City) Daily Morning Call missing all issues from 12 Oct 1881 through 13 App 1882.
