Find Motorist Dead In Auto
An aged La Crosse man was found dead in his car parked off Highway 14, near the Holy Cross Seminary driveway at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Sheriff Roy B. Sampson identified the man as John M. Bender, 76, of R. 1, La Crosse. Dr. George D. Reay, county corner, investigated. Death was reportedly contributed to a heart attack.
County Highway police apparently had felt the illness coming on and drove his car off the highway and parked. The cars emergency brake was pulled tight and headlights were dimmed for parking, officers reported.
Highway police were called by Ray Marshall 2141/2 S. 9th street, who found the body after investigating the parked car. The body was removed to La Crosse funeral chapel, where service arrangements were reported pending arrival of Bender's son from Des Moines, Iowa.

Funeral services for John M. Bender, 75, of R. 1, La Crosse who died suddenly Tuesday evening, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Sletten McKee South Side Chapel. The Rev. E. J. Moritz will officiate and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel Thursday evening from 7 - 9.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie Ann; five daughter, Mrs. Dawson (Opal) Hauser, of Bayfield, Wisconsin, Mrs. Paul (Mildred) Kilian, Mrs. Robert (Elizabeth) Rice, Mrs. Alfred (Elsie) Foster, and Mrs. Paul (Jeanne) Noffke, all of La Crosse; one son, John E. Bender of Des Moines, Ia; one sister, S. E. Taylor of Richland Center, Wis.; one brother, H. L. Bender of Viroqua; 21 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
