Salem — William A. Cusimano, 78, formerly of Hartford Road, Salem, widower of the late Ruth (Schmidl) Cusimano, went home to Heaven Thursday morning, Oct. 21, 2004, at the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, surrounded by his loving family. Born Sept. 10, 1926, in New York City, he was the son of the late James and Louise (Warn) Cusimano. A proud World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army 42nd Engineer Construction Battalion as a truck driver. In 1950, he and Ruth were married in Westchester. Together, they shared 52 wonderful years of marriage before she predeceased him on May 6, 2002. Early on, Bill worked for both the former Westchester Oil Co. and the Colchester Lumber Co. He went on to work in shipping and receiving for Sears in Waterford for 34 years before his retirement in 1991. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. He will be greatly missed, but will be remembered for his gentle and caring ways as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend. He is survived by three children, Darleen A. Cusimano of Salem, William J. Cusimano of East Hampton and Donna L. Duthrie and her husband, Jeff, of Niantic; three grandchildren, Jessica and Nicholas Cusimano and Spencer Cusimano Duthrie; two cousins, Joe and wife Jeannie Cusimano of Holbrook, Long Island, N.Y., and Bob Martin of Bennington, Vt.; and numerous extended family members and friends. Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday directly at The Congregational Church of Salem on Rte. 85 with the Rev. Timothy Dubeau officiating. Committal, with full military honors rendered by the Antique Veterans of Colchester, will be in Linwood Cemetery, Colchester, after the service. Donations in his memory may be made to American Diabetes Assoc., P.O. Box 31160, Hartford 06150-1160. The family would like to extend their most sincere thanks to the staff of Greentree Manor Nursing and Rehab in Waterford for their excellent care given to Bill during his convalescence and to the superb doctors and nurses at L&M for going above and beyond to provide such comfort during his final hours.
