Funeral services for Thomas L. Abshure will be held Saturday, July 3rd, 2004 at 10:00 A.M. at the Church of Christ in Elmore City with Joe Terrell officiating. Burial will be following at the Elmore City Cemetery under the direction of Wooster Funeral Home.
Thomas Lester Abshure of Elmore City, Oklahoma was born October 4th, 1920 in Hatfield, Arkansas to Carmen and Hascue Abshure. He passed away Tuesday, June 29th at his home in Elmore City at the age of 83.
He was a very faithful and active member of the Elmore City Church of Christ. Thomas grew up on a farm near Pauls Valley and attended school in Elmore City. Thomas attended Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University) and Oklahoma City University. Thomas served in the United States Army/Airforce in England, France, and Germany during World War II as a Master Sergeant. Upon Honorable Discharge he worked with Veterans Administration at Oklahoma City for eight years. He then retired from the Soil Conservation Service after 32 years where he served the government as State Administrative Officer.
Thomas enjoyed spending time helping people, especially the elderly with their finance planning and income taxes. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, bowling, gardening, and canning. Today people still call him by his nickname 'AB,' short for Abshure. In this part of the country people remember Thomas for his basketball skills. Opposing team's strategy was to stop the #4 jersey. That was Thomas Abshure.
In 1941 Thomas married Melba Pickens of Elmore City. Together they made their retirement home in Elmore City. Survivors include his wife, Melba Abshure of the home; four daughters and a son; daughter Tommye Kaye and husband Bruce Winters of Nacogdoches, Texas; daughter Donna and husband Tom Horner of Boise, Idaho; daughter Dianne Moxness of Sparks, Nevada; son Grant Abshure and wife Angie of Oklahoma City; daughter Amy and husband Eddie Stewart of Elmore City; ten grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; one brother R.B. Abshure and wife Jeanne of Kingston, Oklahoma; and one sister Lurline and husband Burt VanNice, also of Kingston.
