Gene William Simmerock was born March 10, 1942 at Granite City, IL the son of John Edward Simmerock and Jewell Dean (Champion) Simmerock. He passed away January 24, 2012 at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, IL at the age of 69 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Jewell Simmerock; twin brother Dean Simmerock and one sister Jackie Simmerock.

Gene is survived by two brothers Jeff Simmerock of Birch Tree, MO and Mark Simmerock of Eminence, MO; and a host of other friends.

He was raised in Granite City, IL and East St. Louis, IL. Gene served in the Vietnam War and was inducted on August 9, 1966 and discharged on August 1, 1968. He received the National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Metal and the Vietnam Service Metal. On September 4, 2003 he was admitted to Cohokia Nursing & Rehab in Cohokia, IL. Gene was named Resident of the Month in August of 2009. His favorite colors were blue and green. Gene's favorite childhood memory was building model planes and cars and he also liked to read animal books, which dogs were his favorite. His favorite TV show was Johnny Carson. Gene loved to eat at Steak N Shake and White Castle. He enjoyed visiting the Ozarks when he could. Gene's hobbies were fishing, painting, playing cards (rummy, solitaire, Poker and Canasta) and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. He was very faithful in his faith of God and always made sure to tell others "God Bless You". Gene always had to have two things, his cross necklace and a St. Louis Cardinals' baseball hat.

Gene will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Graveside services were held Monday, January 30, 2012 at the New Eminence Cemetery with Bro. John Crater officiating under the direction of Duncan Funeral Homes of Eminence, MO.
