Betty Ann Burklund of North Platte, NE died February 13, 2012 at Linden CourtShe was born at Sutherland, NE on November 18, 1930, the only child of Alfred Mainard and Teckla Hildegard Swanson Burklund. She attended school in North Platte and graduated in 1948. Betty then worked as a secretary at Fairmont Foods in North Platte for eight years. In 1959, Betty graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. She earned a Master of Science in Home Economics from Oregon State University in 1962. In 1972, she received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota .
She was born at Sutherland, NE on November 18, 1930, the only child of Alfred Mainard and Teckla Hildegard Swanson Burklund. She attended school in North Platte and graduated in 1948. Betty then worked as a secretary at Fairmont Foods in North Platte for eight years. In 1959, Betty graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. She earned a Master of Science in Home Economics from Oregon State University in 1962. In 1972, she received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota .Betty taught high school in Sidney, NE and Braham, Minnesota . She then taught at the college level for Oregon State University , University of Minnesota and Texas State University . Betty was also the assistant state supervisor of Vocational Education for the state of Kansas and later, Registrar at Doane College , in Crete, NE. In 1985, she returned to North Platte to care for her parents until her mother's death in 1991 and her father's in 2000.
Throughout her life, Betty had a close relationship with God and loved to read and study the Bible. After the death of her parents, she renewed her hunger for Biblical learning and attended an in-depth Bible Study taught by Mary Roggow for fifteen years. She enlarged her library of books, especially including Hebrew and Greek theology. She was a member of First Baptist Church in North Platte, NE.
Although Betty was a quiet, gentle person, her passion was "to get the Gospel out to the world". She financially supported more than 40 foreign missionaries as well as other Christian ministries such as Youth for Christ. She received many letters from these missionaries which became the joy of her life. She also made the commitment to pray for them regularly. She is survived by special friends and caregivers Calvin and Mary Roggow and Carol Mohr. Memorials may be made to Youth for Christ, Box 581, North Platte, NE 69103.
Services will be Friday, February 17, 2012 at 1:00 at Adams Swanson Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Wiles officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in Sutherland, NE.
Visitation will be today from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and Friday from 9:00 AM to service time at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of the arrangements.
