Military: Enrolled as Corporal, Company F, 4th Kentucky Cavalry Volunteer, 1861-1864.

Description: 5' 2-5", about 136 pounds, light complexion, brown eyes, light hair.

The Elizabethtown News, Elizabethtown, Kentucky, 1 Jun 1920, p. 1: Double Pensioner Died at St. John - Joseph W. Thomas, age seventy-nine years, died at five o'clock Friday afternoon at his home near St. John, of the infirmities incident to old age. He was in the Federal Army, and later in the railroad service. For many years before his death he drew a pension from both the Government and the railroad company. One sister, Mrs. Luke Williams, survives him. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at St. Johns Catholic church by the Rev. J. M. Abell, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
