Anthropologist. Robert K. Thomas, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, was a Cherokee nationalist, anthropologist, philosopher, teacher, activist, and spiritual leader. He did extensive fieldwork and research with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina, as well as research with the Cherokees of Oklahoma, Lumbee of North Carolina, Sac and Fox of Oklahoma, and the Lakota Sioux of South Dakota. From September 1957 until June 1958, he was part of the UNC-CH Cherokee Project of the Cross-Cultural Laboratory. He is famous for having coined the term "internal colonization" to describe the situation of American Indians and other indigenous peoples in the modern world. Among his many accomplishments, he served as a director of American Indian studies at the University of Arizona.
