Born in 1854 in Dubois, Jasper Co., Indiana to Gerhard Joseph Beumer and Mary Anna (Spellmeier) Beumer. Ben was one of 15 children. At 19 he moved to St. Joseph, TN., with his parents. He married Theresa Escher on April 17, 1883 in Loretto, TN.

The couple moved to Rock Valley, IA in 1889, where he worked at Schemmer Hardware Store and also in the lumber yard until his retirement. They had 10 children. In the Rock Valley area he was known as Benjamin or Ben.
