He was married first to Selena "Lena" Waggoner, (9-8-1846 - 6-8-1894 and married 2-20-1870) with whom he had at least 7 known children. They were Joseph Edward, Matthew L., John Sidney, Susan Adeline, Betty, Milly, and Delphiann (or Delphia). His second wife was Sarah E. Wilson, with whom he had several more children. As known, they were Walter P., twins Minnie and Noah James, Rufus W., Charles L. and Thomas. He went to Missouri at one time, as did his brother, Joseph, but like Joseph, he came back to NC. He made his home at RFD 1, Rural Hall, (Forsyth Co.) NC.
