(Note: Some people say that her maiden name should have been McMillian. That may be true, but all I have seen in records and on her tombstone is McMillan.) Mary Ann was a daughter of William and Minerva G. Smith McMillan. She married Joseph Edward Crews on Dec. 25, 1867 in Forsyth Co. NC., at the home of Nathaniel Sullivan, a blacksmith whose wife was a cousin of Joseph's. They went to Illinois and Missouri where they lived for several years, and where some of their 10 children were born. Eventually they returned to NC, supposedly after a tornado ruined their home one Sunday while they were having dinner at the home of Mary Ann's family, (who also had gone to Missouri, and seemed to have stayed.) They then resided in Germanton, NC where she was a nurse at times for Dr. Bynum in that town. Mary Ann died in Greensboro while living with her daughter-in-law, Kate Crews, and grandson, Jack.
