Funeral services for Dr. John P. Rhoads, 55, former Gettysburg physician who died suddenly Monday morning at his mother-in-law's home, Mrs. E.C. Ott of 222 Springs Ave., will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 from the Bender Funeral Home, Carlisle St., with the Rev. Herman G. Stuempfle Jr., officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
An accident injury which Dr. Rhoads suffered in Tioga on Dec. 18, is believed to have been responsible for his death. He suffered severe bruises of the left leg when his auto door was blown shut in high winds and caught the leg. He died from a massive pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). He was found dead at 12:30 Monday afternoon in bed when his wife and mother-in-law arrived home from a trip to Chambersburg. He had been sleeping when they left. The coroner estimated his time of death as 11:00 a.m. on Monday. His father-in-law. E.C. Ott, died on Dec. 24 and they were in town to attend his funeral.
A native of Ashland, Pa., he was the son of the late John Henry and Harriet (Brecker) Rhoads. He married Janet Ott in Sept. 1941. He graduated from high school in Ashland; Univ. of North Carolina; medical school at the Univ. Of Maryland; interned at Reading Hospital; practiced in Fredericksburg, Pa., before coming to Gettysburg in 1938.
In Aug. 1942 he entered the military, serving in North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany as a surgeon for the 451st AAA Batallion. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received at Anzio beachhead in Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service.
