Msgr. Philip Whitney
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Joseph Co-cathedral in Thibodaux for Msgr. Philip Luke Whitney, 80, a native of New Orleans and resident of Thibodaux, who died at 5:15 p.m. Dec. 5, 2000.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. until funeral time at the church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Thibodaux.

He was the brother of Stanley Bernard Whitney, Claire Whitney Lottinger and Genevieve Whitney Darsey, all of Houma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip L. Sr. and Claire Marie Tinney Whitney; grandparents, Washington and Victoria Bernard Whitney and Stephen D. and Lelia Hortense Vitter Tinney; brothers, Leo Francis Sr., Stephen Douglas, John Donald and Ella Catherine Whitney.

He attended St. Francis de Sales School in Houma, St, Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 1947. Following his ordination, he served as assistant pastor at Mater Dolorosa in New Orleans from 1947 to 1959. From 1951 to 1959 he served as a chaplain in the Louisiana National Guard, and then as pastor at Sacred Heart in Cut Off from 1959 to 1964. He was the founding pastor at St. Mark in Chalmette, serving from 1964 to 1967. He then served in the following church parishes: Annunciation in New Orleans, 1967 to 1969; St. John the Baptist in Edgard, 1969 to 1971; Sacred Heart in Morgan City, 1969 to 1971; Annunziata in Houma, 1979 to 1983; St. Charles Borremeo in Pointe-aux-Chien, 1983 to 1985; St. Joseph in Galliano, 1985 to 1988; and Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Golden Meadow from 1989 until his retirement in 1992.

In 1991 he was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of monsignor by Pope John Paul II.

Among his other assignments within the Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, he served as a fund development committee member, a member of the Clergy Council, and team member of the ministry to priests and a member of the personnel committee. He was the spiritual director of the Legion of Mary, Downtown Curia; chaplain of the Catholic Daughters of America Court Massabielle No. 1134, Morgan City; Faithful Friar for the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Msgr. J.J. Rousseau General Assembly, Franklin; and director of the Charismatic Renewal. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9000 in Golden Meadow and a parishioner of St. Joseph Co-cathedral.
