Jim J. Sanford (1918-2012)


On Thursday, February 9, 2012, Jimmie Jefferson Sanford entered into eternal life surrounded by his loving family at his home in Bells at the age of 93. Jim was born to parents Thomas Jefferson Sanford and Minnie Ola (Huggins) Sanford on July 17, 1918 on the family farm in Bells. He was born, lived, worked and died on the land that was so important to him.

On June 13, 1953, Jim married his loving, caring wife Laura Belle Mason in Denison. Together they raised two sons and a daughter. Jim retired from W.J. Smith Wood Preserving Company in 1980 and was an active member of Cherry Mound Baptist Church until Laura was no longer able to attend. After retirement, he was a farmer and rancher and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Gardening and canning was so much a part of his life as well.

Jim is survived by his wife Laura, son Lee Stevens and wife Pam of Quinlan; daughter Sherry Kelley of Bells; sister Bonnie Lashley of Lawton, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Craig Stevens and wife Jacquie of Madison, Conn.; Renee Cribbs of San Diego, Calif.; Anthony Stevens and wife Melony of Rockwall; Leah Holland and husband Joey of Denton; Jordan Carter of Rowlett; Jared Kelley and wife Carrie of Denison and Justin Kelley of Bells and nine great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Richard Stevens and 11 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Mr. Sanford will be 10 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2012 at Mullican-Little Funeral Home Chapel, Bells. Officiating the service will be Reverend Mike Hermanson and Reverend Roy Duff and burial at Cherry Mound Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephew Don Garner. The family request that memorials be made to Guardian Hospice, 320 N. Travis Ste 308, Sherman, Texas 75090.

The family will be at the funeral home from 5-6 p.m. on Sunday, February 12 and other times at the Sanford home. The online guest book may be signed at www.mullican-little.com.
