Orville was born 20 Sep 1891 in Swaledale, IA. He enlisted into the US Navy in 1912 for 4 years and was part of the landing force during the occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico. During this time he was accidentally wounded in the back by friendly fire. He was honorably discharged in 1916 in Philadelphia. He eventually got a job as a motorman and also met and married Mary Alice Lawson in 1916. She was born in March of 1892 in Camden, NJ. After their marriage they lived with Mary’s parents in Camden. Mary’s parents died in 1917 and 1921. Mary and Orville had two children in 1923 (Alfred) and 1925 (Merry). Mary died in August of 1926. After the death, Cap and the children moved to New Mexico. He and Dorthea Lucille Gaffield Hollowell were married 5 Dec 1927 in Belen, NM. She was born 2 Nov 1906 in Livingston Co., MI. They went on to have six children along with Orville’s two children (with his marriage with Mary). Cap died in 28 Jan 1961 in Silver City, NM. He was buried at Memory Lane Cemetery in Silver City, NM. Dorthea died 25 Mar 1988 in Turnersville, TX. She was buried next to Orville. - from the Irwin Genealogies 2016 (with the help of CJ Hughs).

Family story (by CJ Hughs):
Orville received honorable discharge form the US Navy. He enlisted Jan 12 1912 in Des Moines, Iowa for 4 years. He was a member of the landing force during the occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico April 22-30, 1914. He was paid $59.19 upon discharge, at the time his monthly pay was $33. Date of discharge was Jan 11, 1916 at Philadelphia, PA. His rank was Coxswain. It was not very well known that Orville was wounded in the back during the battle of Vera Cruz, Mexico. In fact, none of his military records mention it at all. Perhaps the reason the wound was omitted in his records, is because it was inflicted by so called "friendly fire." As they charged up the hill, the men below him were firing their rifles, and he was shot in the back.
