James Freeman Cook was born in a sod roof shack on the homestead at Boundary Creek on October 30th, 1899. He was the eldest son of James Henry and Emma Adeline Furman Cook. The pioneer Cook family settled in the Boundary Creek area in 1892 and the John Furman family in 1889.
Freeman with his brother, Oil attended Boundary Creek School and later with their sister, Gladys went to the Cardston Public School .
Freeman married Berneice Hadfield on March 12th, 1927 and they settled on the St. Mary's River where they raised their family of seven children .
Freeman operated the family ranch with his father until Henry and Emma retired into Cardston in 1942. Freeman and Berneice continued ranching with their sons and raised fine herds of sheep and cattle. All have been great lovers of horses. Freeman was highly respected and loved for his deep trust in his fellow man.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Berneice of Cardston; sons, Jim (June) Cobblehill, B.C., Royce (Lenore ) of Carway, Lloyd (Janice) of Cochrane, Meryl (Dinah), now on the home place; daughters, Faye (Gerald), Eggen of Los Angeles, California, Geraldine of Cardston and Mary Lynn Beazer of Cardston; 19 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gladys Mitchell of Invermere, B.C.
He was predeceased by his brother, Oil. Freeman passed away quietly August 13th in the Cardston Municipal Hospital at the age of 84.
