A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in New York City May 7, 1861, mustered into federal service there June 3 as a private with Co. C, 38th New York Infantry. A promotion to corporal followed on October 31, 1862, but by the following January he was back in ranks. He honorably discharged at term's end June 22, 1863, at East New York. He also enlisted and mustered at New York City March 23, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 1st New York Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company June 27, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia, his last name by then spelled "Buck." His enlistment paper for the 1st NY Cav has "George" as his first name, but that was crossed out and replaced with "Claus."

By 1890, he was residing in Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, by which time he was going by "George Brown."
