Husband of Mary J. (Pearce) Moran (1858-1947). William's first wife was Nancy "Nannie" M. (Brooks) Moran (1846-1881). He married Nancy Brooks on November 22, 1866 in Andrew County, Missouri and had five children with her: James, Joseph, Edward, George and Elizabeth Moran. After Nancy died, William married Mary J. Pearce and had one son with her named Roy Stephen Moran. William was the son of James W. Moran and Nancy (Earthenhouse) Moran. William was a Veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War. He served in Company B, 51st Missouri Infantry.

When William's first wife, Nancy, died, the inscription on her headstone read..

"William do not lonely be
But live aright and come to me.
Children I am happy now
With a crown so bright upon my brow.
Friends you must meet me here
Where ne'er is known a sigh or tear."
