Sarah Evelyn Barnes, 96, Blue Knob, passed away Thursday at her home.
She was born in Blue Knob, daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Dively) Berkhimer. She married Theodore "Ted" Barnes. He passed away in 1970.
Surviving are seven children: Shirley (John) Tate, Louise (George) Smith, Robert (Sally) Barnes, Genevieve (Jerry, deceased) Robine, Barbara (Gary) Renner, Leroy (Judy Lightner) Barnes and Barry (Cathy) Barnes; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Edna Berkhimer; brother-in-law, Mac (Betty) Barnes; and 26 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, three brothers, four half-brothers and two grandchildren.
Together, Sarah and Ted owned and operated a dairy farm and raised their family. She was a charter member of the Blue Knob Volunteer Fire Company and was honored for 25 years of volunteer service with the Ladies Auxiliary.
Sarah was an avid quilter and handmade about 50 quilts for her children, grandchildren and others. She also quilted with the quilters at Homewood and was a volunteer at Homewood for more than 30 years. She enjoyed gardening and grew many flowers in her various flower gardens.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Leslie-Miller Funeral Home, Claysburg, and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Mount Hope United Church of Christ in Blue Knob, where Sarah has been a lifelong member, officiated by Pastor Bob Penner.
