Kalona- Formerly of Wellman- Lois Pauline Bender was born May 17, 1921 near Versailles, Missouri, the daughter of Amos J. and Nannie(Yoder)Gingerich. She was baptized at age 11 and became a member of Mt. Zion Church in Missouri. When she was 12 years old her family moved to Hesston, Kansas. She graduated from Hesston Academy in 1939 and attended Hesston College. After moving to Iowa County, Iowa she taught at a country school for several years. Lois was united in marriage to Wallace P. Bender on August 10, 1943 near Williamsburg, Iowa. They resided in Iowa County where they lived their life surrounded by home, family and the West Union Church. In 1983 the couple moved to Wellman and Wallace later died on May 13, 1996. Lois later moved to Independent Living at Pleasantview on May 17, 2002. Lois was a member of West Union Church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School, Bible School and volunteering where needed. She also enjoyed family, church history, Bible Study watching birds and seeing the spring flowers. Lois truly enjoyed her children, grandchildren and having others visit in their home. Lois died Monday, February 6, 2012 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 90 years.

Lois is survived by two daughters: Nancy(James)Swartzendruber of West Bend, Wisconsin and Ruth Anne(Michael)Bankston of Lilburn, Georgia; a son: Richard Bender of Grinnell; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; three brothers: Paul(Vesta)Gingerich of Kalona, Simon Gingerich of Goshen, Indiana and Clayton Gingerich of Kalona.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers: Truman, Orie, Fred and Leroy Gingerich and two sisters: Charity Troyer and Eunice Histand.

Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the West Union Mennonite Church rural Parnell. Burial will be Thursday at 9:30 am at the West Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Memorials are for West Union Mennonite Women or Mennonite Central Committee.
