PETER J. DINIUS
was born in Stark County, Ohio, in 1816, and there passed the days of his youth and early manhood. During his residence in that county, he was united in marriage with Miss Sophia Schisler, March 10, 1839. In 1856, he came to Huntington County, Ind. and located upon a tract of land in Jackson Township, upon which no improvements have been made. During the first was ill, and therefore unable to begin the labor of clearing his land; and a scarcity of provisions in the following summer reduced his family to almost a suffering condition; but thoughout all his trials he preserved a brave heart and manly courage, and in the end was richly recompensed for his labor. In his later years the little log cabin was succeeded by a comfortable residence, and his farm returned him a handsome revenue. His present residence is one of the handsomest in the county, and all his surroundings prove him an enterprising and systematic farmer.
His wedded life was blessed by seven children, viz., Margaret D., Amanda E., Sylvester, Angeline, Sarah L., and Franklin. August 28, 1855, his wife died, one year prior to his removal to this county. October 5, 1856, he married Mrs. A. M. Rose, of Navarre, Stark Co., Ohio. This second union was blessed by five children as follows; John P., Lucinda B. Theodore, Mary F. and William, of whom William and Mary F. are deceased.
During the late war two of his sons volunteered as recruits, and again as veterans in 1863, serving until the close of the war. After returning to their home, they resumed their position as assistants upon their father's farm, enabling him, in his declining years, to retire from active labor, and enjoy the fruits of a long life of industry and labor."
