Coach Johnny Anderson, age 67, of Marion, died on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Care Partners Health Services in Asheville following a 10 month battle with cancer. Johnny was born in Marion on November 30, 1941 to the late John and Carrie Ray Anderson. He was a graduate of Marion High School and East Carolina University and was retired as a school teacher, football coach and girls basketball coach from Marion High School, McDowell High School and Freedom High School in Morganton. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marion. Johnny is survived by his wife of 43 years, his daughter, his three grandchildren, two sisters, and a number of nieces and nephews.
b A celebration of life will be held at the McDowell High School football stadium on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. In case of rain, the service will be in the school gymnasium. The family will visit with guests following the service in the Commons Area of the school. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the Johnny Anderson Athletic Scholarship Fund, c/o McDowell High School, 600 McDowell High Drive, Marion, NC 28752, or to Hospice of McDowell County. 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC 28752.
