In 1871 or 1872 he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He became involved in the wholesale leaf tobacco business and was successful enough that he built a substantial home at the SW corner of N 32nd and W Wells in 1891.
While maintaining his Milwaukee home, he subsequently bought land near Mukwanago to raise tobacco and a large herd of pure-bred Holstein cattle.
He married Nora Devendorf of Delavan, WI, in 1878. They had four children: Helena K., Donna Norine, George J., and Daniel Devendorf. That marriage ended in divorce in 1896.
He married Mary Bloodgood in 1901. They had two children: John Bloodgood, and Louise Georgine.
