Born Jan. 12, 1920, in Marion, Ohio, he was the son of the late Walley and Georgia (Rowan) Briggs, and had lived in Lisbon and Salem, Ohio, be fore moving to Atwater in 1944. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army and was decorated with three Bronze Stars while fighting for the liberation of the Philip pines, seeing action on the Island of Luzon and during the occupation of Japan.
Mr. Briggs was a member of the Atwater United Methodist Church, V.F.W. Post 6730 of Sebring, the National Rifle Association, and was a former member of the Atwater Lions Club. For 17 years, he had been a crane operator and draftsman with Babcock and Wilcox in Alliance, and later, until his retirement, he worked as a layout artist with Bellows Sign Co. in Akron. Many people remember Ray as the owner of Briggs Signs in Atwater.
Survivors include his wife, June (Parshall) Briggs; daughter, Lori Briggs of Limaville; sons, Ray and wife, Simone Briggs, of Hartville, Ron and wife, Pat Briggs, of Stow, Gary and wife, Joan Briggs, of Las Vegas, Nev., Bob and wife, Sandy Briggs, of Clinton, Ohio, Mike Briggs of Atwater; 17 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, James; granddaughter, Gina; great- granddaughter, Sara; sisters, Donna and Stella.
Pastor Bill Nicewarner officiated the services. Interment at Atwater Cemetery.
