In 1895 he was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for representative to the Massachusetts General Court from Stoneham. When gold was discovered in the Klondike about 1896, Winfield Hurd started for that region staying there for several years. Upon returning to Stoneham, he was employed in the cutting room at the T. H. Jones Shoe Factory (Stoneham Independent, 25 June 1904).
