John H. Walters, 73, 737 S. First St. W., died Thursday in a Missoula hospital.
He was born Nov. 4, 1904, in Mace, Idaho, and moved with his mother to Missoula, where he completed his education. Walters was involved in early mining in the Missoula area.
He was widely known for his many years in the radiator business. He also worked as a machinist. He was an active political figure and was a candidate for Missoula mayor in 1960.
After army service. he opened Johnny's Radiator Service, which he operated until his death.
He married Georgia Grovdale in Missoula in 1941. He served in World War II in the Army 826 Air Engineer Squadron and received special recognition for the invention of the hydraulic bomb lift. He was honorably discharged Sept 24, 1945.
In 1961, he married Mabel Dashnea.
Walters was a member of Kathleen Walford Senior Citizens, the American Legion and the 56th Fighter Group Association. He was a life member of Ole Beck Post No. 209 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as Post Commander from 1969 to 1977. He was quartermaster for many years and also served as district commander.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel; a daughter, Pamela Leslie, Missoula; two step-sons-, Pete Dashnea, Falls City, Wash., and a step-daughter, Barbara Dashnea, Missoula.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Squire-Simmons-Carr Chapel. Ole Beck Post of VFW will provide a color guard.
Pallbearers will be Norman Grovdale, Herman Meister, Ralph Paquin, Everett Lajoie, Wallace Clark and Warren Leslie.
Memorials may be sent to the Missoula Humane Society.
