Max was the passenger in a plane crash in the Bridger Mountain Range. It was theorized that the pilot flew into a down draft as he tried to make it over the mountains. When he saw he could not turn his plane away from the mountain, he cut the throttle. The plane struck almost nose-first into a pile of boulders.

John Watson, the pilot, was also killed in the crash.
