Charles (Chuck) Gore Irvine Jr., 61, left us all too soon Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

Chuck was born in Des Moines August 5, 1950, to Anne and Charles Irvine Sr. He attended Perkins Elementary, Johnston at Camp Dodge, Franklin Junior High, and Roosevelt High School, graduating in 1968. He also attended Simpson and Santa Barbara Community colleges.

In his early years, Chuck worked for his father and grandfather at their plastic and paper businesses, held construction related jobs, and was a salesman for his family's Gore Creek Distributing. In the early 1980s Chuck became enamored with cycling and started riding RAGBRAI. In April 1985, Chuck started Boulevard Sports, which became an Official RAGBRAI Bike Shop, a designation and honor of which he was very proud. Chuck was also very proud of his 31 years of sobriety.

Chuck loved to travel, particularly to Mexico near Tulum and Akumal. It was there in 1987 that he met his wife Ann Frahm, another Des Moines resident. They were married in January 1988 and shared a wonderful, loving life.

Along with riding bikes, Chuck enjoyed kayaking, walking with his dogs, golf, history, gardening, good food and listening to the Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones and reggae music. He and Ann loved their trips to the Yucatan with a car full of outdoor gear, bikes and dogs, along with their summer trips to Madeline Island, Wisc., and Marcell, Minn.

Chuck was a very kind man of integrity and old-fashioned values. He loved life, living it to its fullest, and he was very blessed to have a multitude of good friends from all walks of life. He was known for his dry humor and quick wit, which inevitably kept things quite entertaining. Chuck loved the outdoors, nature, and all of its intricacies. He was an adventurer, finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. His life was unfairly cut short by cancer. Chuck's message is, "Healthy people don't know how lucky they are; don't take your good health for granted, things can change so suddenly".

Chuck is survived by his wife, Ann, dogs, Happy and Felix, parents, Anne and Chuck Irvine Sr., sister, Julia (Woody) Brenton, brother, Ted (Chris), all of Des Moines, and brother, Tom of Boulder, Colo. Also surviving Chuck are his nieces and nephews, Victoria, Ted (Yara), and Woody Jr. Brenton; , Mac and Maggie Irvine; Thomas, William and Helen Irvine; Emily (Patrick) MacFarland; and Keeley Frahm-Lowe; and mother-in-law, Betty Frahm.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m, Friday, February 10, 2012, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Avenue, Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 9, at Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel.

Memorial contributions in Chuck's name may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa or the Des Moines YMCA Camp, Boone.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care he received from the doctors, nurses and aides at Iowa Methodist Hospital and Mayo Clinic, and the kind support from friends during Chuck's illness.
