Martha was the daughter of Stephen Ashley and Roxana Pitcher, she was born in New York and in 1835 became some of the earliest settlers in Kendall County. She married Simeon P. Ives 24 Mar 1838 in LaSalle County, IL, they had 5 children, all born in Illinois: Albert J. b. 29 May 1840; Julia A. b. 1 Jan 1842; Franklin B. b. 13 Jan 1845; Adda M. b. Nov 1847 and Almon K. b. 10 Feb 1850. In 1881 they moved to Montana where they lived until their deaths.
