John married E. Willodean Cummins in Madison, Wisconsin, on November 27, 1942.

He operated George H. Walters & Sons Poultry & Egg Business in Servia for 30 years. He lived in Servia 48 years before coming to North Manchester.
He was a member of the Servia United Church of Christ, a member and past Master of the Demming Masonic Lodge #88 in North Manchester, and the Fort Wayne Scottish Rite. He was also a charter member and former president of the North Manchester Lions Club, a member of the N.C.H.A. camping organization for 26 years, and sang in the Chain of Lakes Barbershop Quartet (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.) in Columbia City for 20 years.

He was a World War II veteran of the US Army.
