Mary Ann Holmes Gates, age 91, of Roseburg, passed away on June 8, 1994 at her home. Mrs. Gates was born on January 9, 1903, in Hodgeman County, Kansas, to Joseph and Mary Volavka Tonar. Mrs. Gates had lived in Roseburg since 1947. She was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, A.A.R.P., and the Women of the Moose #361. She was also a lifetime member of the Roseburg Senior Citizens Inc., and the South Deer Creek Grange.
Mrs. Gates was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Holmes in 1969. In 1972, she married Arnold Gates, who preceded her in death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. Mrs. Gates was survived by: her son, Carl D. Holmes and his wife, Beulah of Roseburg; daughters, Gennell M. Fitzgerald of Roseburg; Mary Jane and her husband, Bill Guthrie of Roseburg; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaugher.
