Mattie Ellen Smith, was the daughter of Nathan Albion and Alice Virginia Smith. She was born in Morgan County, Missouri, on October 16, 1884, the second of seven children.
When she was a young child, the family moved to a farm near Otterville, Cooper County, Missouri where she grew up. She was educated in the Otterville schools and also attended Otterville College. Later she attended the Normal School in Warrensburg, Missouri where she studied to be a teacher. She later taught in the Otterville public schools. She was also a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
In 1905, her parents moved to Welch, Craig County, Oklahoma. As a single lady, she accompanied them to Oklahoma. There she continued her teaching career. While teaching in Oklahoma, she met and later married Thomas S. Ellis on April 18, 1908, in Oswego, Labette County, Kansas. The couple had one son, an only child, Carl Shields Ellis on June 22, 1918. She was thirty-four and her husband was forty-four.
The family later moved to Ordway, Colorado, where her brother was living. There Mattie resumed teaching and was secretary of the school board. After enduring blizzards, sandstorms and drought in Colorado, the family returned to Missouri in 1932.
In Missouri, they engaged in farming the land that belonged to her husband's parents. They continued to farm until her husband's death on December 8, 1957.
Mattie then sold the farm and moved to the town of Sedalia, where her son and his family resided. She continued to live there even after her son and his wife had moved to Lowry City, Missouri for employment purposes.
In 1975, her health began to decline. At that time, she re-located to Lowry City, Missouri to be closer to her son and his wife,

Mattie Ellen Smith Ellis, died on August 9, 1977, in Lowry City, St Clair County, Missouri. She was almost ninety-three years of age. Her beloved older brother, Shields R. Smith preceded her in death on the same evening just an hour before Mattie drew her last breath. She died without knowing of his passing.

She is buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri, next to her husband of forty-nine years, Thomas Spencer Ellis.
