Thomas Spencer Ellis was born on December 18, 1874 in Clifton City, Pettis County, Missouri. With an eight grade education, he taught school in Deepwater, Missouri, before relocating to Welch, Craig County, Oklahoma. There he married Mattie Ellen Smith on April 28, 1908 and made a living as a jeweler.
Between 1920-1930 the family moved to Crowley County, Colorado. With the blizzards, sandstorms, and the Depression, homesteading the land proved to be extremely difficult and the family returned to Missouri in 1932.
The family lived and farmed in Bowling Green Township, Pettis County, Missouri, until his death on December 8, 1957 of heart failure. He was 83 years old and left behind his wife, son, two grandchildren, and two sisters.
