Bruce Blanton Coates, 58, of Winchester, husband of Connie Combs Coates, passed away Wednesday, February 1, in Atlanta, GA. A native of Owenton, he was born September 22, 1953, to the late Herschel Coates and Willnetta Hutcherson Coates, who survives in Owenton. Bruce was the Vice President of Market Development at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, a data and solutions provider to the insurance industry. He led the market and business development activities for the Life and Health insurance markets for LexisNexis.
Prior to his position with LexisNexis, Bruce served as the Vice President of Strategy Management at Insurity. In addition, Bruce served a term as president Independent Insurance Agents of Kentucky and was a vice president at General Electric's re-insurance division, and also served as CEO for the Oklahoma Association of Insurance Agents. He was also an independent insurance agent for over 16 years and specialized in property/casualty and life/health insurance sales. Overall, Bruce had over 35 years of experience in the insurance industry.
Bruce had a B.A. degree in Computer Science from Transylvania University, Lexington, KY. He also held the CPCU and CIC insurance professional designations. In addition to formal and industry training, Bruce also attained Six Sigma certification.
Bruce also served his community in several areas including President of the Winchester KY Chamber of Commerce and was an active member of the Winchester First United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife and mother, Bruce is survived by his brothers, David (Sara) Coates and Robert K. Coates, sons, Bruce Blanton (Lisa) Coates, Jr., Taylor (Amy) Codell Coates, Ronald Allen (fiancé,Leslia LeMaster) Wilson, daughter and son-in-law, Daphne Wilson Martin and William Glenn Martin, 5 grandchildren, Logan Thomas Martin, Wilson Glenn Martin, Harrison Miles Ward, Callaway Blanton Coates, Elizabeth Alice Coates, brothers-in-law, Wayne (Karen) Combs and Mike (Lisa) Combs, Godchildren, Anna, Luke, and Nicholas, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11am at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Williams officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 5p-7p at the church. Burial will be in the Winchester Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Stuart Bowling, Jimmy Bush, Mark Male, Steve Miller, Wayne Combs, Mike Combs, and Andrew Coates. Honorary pallbearers will be his co-workers in the Insurance Industry from Kentucky to Oklahoma, Kansas, to Connecticut, and finally to Georgia, including his friends and colleagues at LexisNexis, Caleb Brown, Geno Preskitt, Steven Mosby, Medford Moreland, Rick Catron, Brooks May, Mike McGuire, John Roche, Mike Nedrow, and Glen Jewel.
