John W. Gillion was a native of Scotland, who as a young boy followed his father into war. He was at the battle of Waterloo as an hospital assistant. He left the military and England, and after a short stint at sea and a shipwrecking, he landed in Salem, eventually settling in Weymouth MA. He became a tanner and boot maker and died in Weymouth.
