Leone Thelma Johnson
Devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Leone Thelma Johnson passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 29, 2012. She was the rock and foundation of her family. Living in grace and strength, Leone inspired all around her with her patient continence, loving nature, delightful sense of humor, beautiful smile, and remarkable tenderness.
Daughter of Alben S. and Clara Peterson Johnson, Leone was born on November 24, 1917 in Ogden, Utah. Her father died when she was ten years old. Her mother re-married Carl Andreason, and their family moved to California. Leone graduated from UCLA with a BA in Education and a certificate in General Elementary and Early Childhood Education.
After serving an LDS mission in the Eastern States Mission, Leone married Clarence Budd Johnson in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on January 6, 1944.
Dedicated to education and learning, Leone taught kindergarten for 30 years in the Ogden City system. She spent 29 of those years at Horace Mann Elementary. Leone was a member of a geology club for 20 years, traveling and studying the geology of many western U.S. areas. She was also a member of the Weber Historical Society. Leone belonged to study clubs, attended Education Week at BYU for 25 years, and graduated from the Weber State LDS Institute with 42 credits (more than any other graduate at that time). She also attended many "Know Your Religion" series and graduate classes at USU, U of U, and BYU.
She was an active member of the LDS Church and served as Junior Sunday School coordinator, in Relief Society Presidencies, and as a Gardens Retirement Home Relief Society counselor and teacher.
Leone was a wonderful grandmother to her 13 grandchildren. She arranged educational outings, sleepovers, and established many beloved family traditions. She was also an attentive daughter, maintaining a close relationship with her mother who lived to be almost 101 years old.
Leone's hobbies included playing the piano, oil painting, baking wonderful treats for her family, sewing, teaching painting at the Garden's Retirement home as a volunteer, working on the computer, and creating her own greeting cards.
She is survived by her three children, Charles (Nedra) of Centerville; Stephen (Gayle) of Kaysville; and Janelle Barrett (Dan) of Bellingham, Washington; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Darias of Provo; sister Marie Flanders and brother Charles Johnson (Vyla) of California. Proceeded in death by her husband, Clarence Budd Johnson.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lorin Farr 2nd Ward, 480 7th Street.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
