Israel Cale grew up on a farm in Sugar Grove Twp., Warren Co., PA.* The name of his father is unknown but his mother Malitta Cale (1793-1893) married second a man named Rowley. Both husbands were deceased by 1850 and Malitta was living with her son and two younger daughters. By the mid-1850s Israel had married Harriet Matilda Dean (1830-1873) and the couple (along with mother Malitta Rowley) moved to a small farm in the LaBoeuf Twp., Erie Co., PA. Israel and Harriet had at least one child: Edwina (b. ca. 1855). On March 6, 1865, at the end of the Civil War, Israel was mustered into the U.S. Army as a private in Company B, 98th Pennsylvania Volunteers.
