She met Jack in 1951 at a Youth for Christ meeting. (She used to volunteer at the book table, so she could flirt with the ushers - Jack was head usher). They were married on August 5, 1955. Their home was blessed by the arrival of each of their four children, John, Jolene, Jeff and Jeanine.
In 1966 they became Members of Wycliffe Bible Translators. They served as missionaries in the Amazon Jungles of Peru until 1980.
Joyce became a pastor's wife in 1983. (She worried because she couldn't play the piano. She had always thought it was a prerequisite). They served at the Chula Vista Missionary Church until it moved to Eastlake.
Joyce worked to support Jack's ministry as a bilingual translator and school secretary with the Chula Vista Elementary School District until her retirement in 1995. During this time she was one of the founders of Clear View Charter School.
Sensing a call to prison ministries, together Joyce and Jack founded Pastors to Prisoners, Inc. in 1996. They labored together in this ministry until her recent illness made her too weak to continue. The reoccurrence of cancer in June of 2002 progressed until she was ushered into the arms of her Savior on August 1, 2003 at 12:27 a.m.
She leaves behind her husband, John "Jack" Oien; children, John M. Oien, Jeanine Oien, Jeff and Lisa Oien, and Leesa Rush; as well as ten grandchildren.
