Mr. Rigg was a Union Civil War veteran. He enlisted as a private in Company G, 48th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 25, 1861. Promoted to sergeant, he mustered out of service at Little Rock, Arkansas on August 15, 1865.
The 48th Illinois served under Gen. Grant, fought at Shiloh and Vicksburg and Marched to the Sea with Gen. Sherman. The regiment suffered 10 officers and 113 enlisted men who were killed in action or mortally wounded and 6 officers and 251 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 380 fatalities.
