Ernest Freudenburg came to Madison county from Page county, Iowa in 1891. He lived in a sod house with the Earl Fichter family at first, being employed during the summer for $18.00 a month. In the fall the men threshed. Mr. Fichter took his horse powered machine about the neighborhood until December 1, when the snows began.
Ernest and his brother, Henry, each purchased an eighty, which is the size of many Iowa farms. They found it not enought in Nebraska and Henry Freudenburg purchased his brother's share whcih was where Otto Freudenburg lived in 1940.
Ernest farmed the next winter for himself and January returned to Iowa where he was married January 5. They came to Madison and for two years rented from Jacob Kalmer. Several farms were purchased.
Mr. and Mrs. Freudenburg had thirteen children whose names are as follows: Walter of Battle Creek, Rudolph, Arthur, Arnold, Erich, Mrs. Henry Demmel, and Mrs. Arland Schmitt, all of the Madison area; Oscar of Colorado; Victor of Kentucky, Mrs. John Knapp and Ottilie of North Platte; Benjamin of Wisconsin; and Mrs. Alfred Schmidt of Humphrey. Walter is the only one in this family who is still living. Their descendants still live in or near Madison in 1992.
