Neuman C. Petty, 91, passed away February 2, 2012, as a result of a massive stroke suffered on Sunday, January 29, 2012.
Neuman was born in Hurricane, Utah, on September 17, 1920, to Charles B. and Maggie Cottam Petty, the youngest of five children. His father started a Ford dealership in Hurricane, then moved the family to Cedar City in 1927. They moved again in 1936, this time to Salt Lake City (over mild objections from Maggie).
Neuman graduated from South High School in 1938 and entered the University of Utah the same year. He studied business administration. He interrupted his education to serve an LDS mission in Eastern Canada with great distinction.
Newly back from his mission, Neuman saw a short, striking brunette waiting at a bus stop in Salt Lake. He tried to impress her with his new convertible, but having been trained by her aunts not to talk to strangers, she didn't even acknowledge him. Neuman persisted, got a mutual friend to introduce them, and after a relatively short courtship, he married Ireva Fern Gray on November 14, 1942, in the Salt Lake Temple. They remain madly in love after almost 70 years together.
After their honeymoon to Niagara Falls, Neuman enlisted in the Army and was almost immediately whisked away to basic training in California. He became a sergeant in General Patton's Third Army, traveling 1500 miles through Europe and taking part in the Battle of the Bulge.
Neuman returned to the University of Utah following his discharge, took up his studies for a BA in Business Management, graduating in 1947. That year he succeeded his father as president of Petty Motor Company, a position he maintained until 1970. His business interests then leaned towards commercial real estate and multiple (and highly interesting) investments.
After his father died in 1973, Neuman became the patriarch of the Petty Family, organizing family parties, overseeing weddings, birthdays, and funerals. He was a constant source of help, encouragement, monetary support, and unfailing good humor to his extended family.
Neuman was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Rachel P. Lunt, Norma P. Strasser, Utahna P. Belnap and Leila P. Shipp.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Ireva Gray Petty, his seven children: Ireva (Lynn) Noren, Charles (Kathleen), Wayne (Robyn), Brent (Joan), Ralph (Jan), Keith (Anne) and Albert (Pam); 25 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and his brother-in-law, Dil Strasser.
Family and friends may call at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City, Sunday evening, Feb. 5, 2012, from 7 to 9 pm.
Funeral services will be held at Arlington Hills Ward, 1300 East Fairfax Road (access off Virginia street at approximately 300 North), Salt Lake City, Utah, Monday, Feb. 6, at 11:00 am. Family and friends may visit from 9:30 to 10:30 at the church prior to the services.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to the Moran Eye Center.
