James H enlisted in the Dade County Home Guards as a Private in Captain Switzler's Company, July 5, 1861, at Melville (Dadeville), MO. He was 5'9", Blue eyes, Light hair, Fair complexion. He was discharged July 16, 1864.

James H Dunaway married Mary Mason August 20, 1865, by William Derby, MG.

In the 1880 Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri Census James H, age 42, is the Sheriff of Dade County. His wife Mary is 35, son Victor H age 13, daughter Maud age 12, Madge M age 10, Claud C age 8, Bessie B age 6, James H age 3, and John L is 5 months.

News of the death of J. H. Dunaway of Morgan township comes to us from Dadeville. Mr. Dunaway was sheriff of Dade county twelve years ago, and resided in Greenfield during his term of office. He was an efficient officer, and has always been a prominent citizen of the county. He left many warm friends at this place who will be grieved to hear of his death, which was due to heart failure and occurred very suddenly.
