Virginia (Rumph) Brice Hairfield, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 1, 2012.

She was born in Charleston on March 8, 1924, the daughter of the late Harry Legare and Bessie Lee Harbison Rumph.

Virginia was married and widowed early to Citadel graduate Lt. Robert Brice who was killed during the World War II D-Day Allied Normandy invasion.

She served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed at the Marietta GA air station.

After the war and moving to Roanoke, VA, Virginia met and married Clyde M. Hairfield on December 6, 1946. They were united as life partners for 63 years and raised five sons.

Mrs. Hairfield worked and taught as a hair stylist in Charleston for many years.

She was an active member and officer of both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Virginia was a long time member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Virginia Hairfield is survived by a large loving family, including her five sons and their wives: Steven (Beth), Rodney (Michelle), Kim (Barbara), Mark (Pat) and Wendell (Melinda); sister Ernestine James; sisters-in-law Betty Rumph of Charleston, Ruth Lee of Wake Forest NC, Barbara Anne Moyer of Charlotte NC, Louise Mattera of Roanoke VA; brother-in-law Gary Lee Hairfield of Atlanta GA; seventeen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hairfield was preceded in death by her husbands; her sisters, Elaine Mills and Anne Walters; brother Harry L. Rumph, Jr., and her sister-in-law, Carolyn Sue Weeks of Roanoke VA.

A private burial will be held in Bethany Cemetery for family members.
