Dr. Wayne Gladstone Bragg, age 78, of Deep Gap, died Wednesday afternoon, September 30, 2009, at Watauga Medical Center, after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 56 years Ann Kay Bragg, three sons, three daughters, 10 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; his brother, his aunt, and other extended family in North Carolina and northern Georgia, all of whom he loved dearly and was very special to him.

Dr. Wayne Bragg was born January 17, 1931 in Madison County, GA, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Odell and Bertie Carey Bragg. He grew up in Kannapolis, North Carolina where his father was a weaver in Cannon Mills, Inc. After receiving his early education in the public schools, he attended Wingate College, Wheaton College (B.A., 1953; M.A., 1957), Fuller Seminary, Appalachian State (M.A.), and the University of Texas, Austin (Ph.D., 1973).
In 1956 Wayne and his wife Ann left Wheaton to do student missionary work in the Caribbean and Latin America for The International Fellowship Evangelical Students (IFES). His work involved conducting camps, holding leadership-training conferences, pioneering and establishing national Christian student work.
Dr. Bragg developed and directed an innovative HNGR program (Human Needs and Global Resources) at Wheaton College in 1976 that sent college students around the world to help those in need. Dr. Wayne Bragg, under Enable International, also conducted international research in alternative fuel solutions and women's health concerns at Washington University in St. Louis.
Wayne and Ann retired at his mountain home in Deep Gap, NC 1998. Dr. Bragg and Ann couldn't "stay retired" as they helped translate, find jobs, and assist with banking and other needs for local Hispanic workers. They also became an integral part of the St. Luke's Episcopal family in Boone, NC.

Dr. Wayne G. Bragg selflessly dedicated his life work, heart and soul, to help educate and enhance the lives of others. He will be sorely missed not only by his family, friends, and associates; but, also by a world community that has been touched by his life.

A Memorial service will be held Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 PM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Boone with The Reverend Cynthia Banks and The Reverend Deacon Greg Erikson officiating, a reception will follow the service at the church.

Hampton Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements.
