Edward Morgan Smith, 92, of Ankeny passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center on Monday, January 30, 2012. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Rising Sun Church of Christ. A luncheon will follow the service, prior to burial at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery.

Edward was born May 24, 1919 in Ward, Iowa to John and Mary Smith. He served in the U.S. Army for four years, commanding a tank destroyer during World War II. After returning from war, he and Betty Heggen met and were married August 11, 1946.

Edward spent seven years driving streetcars and curbliners for the Des Moines Railway followed by thirty years, from 1952 to1982, as a passenger tire inspector for Firestone Tire. After retirement, he spent a short time working at Dahl's then worked at the Riverfront YMCA until 1989.

Edward is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty; son, Steve Smith; daughter, Linda (John) Payne; and two grandchildren, Kathlyn (Todd) Luliak and John (Heather) Payne.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel. Memorial contributions may be directed to Community Church of Christ 4018 NE 45th Dr. Des Moines, IA 50317 or Rising Sun Church of Christ 6390 NE Rising Sun Drive Pleasant Hill, IA 50327.
