Last rites will be conducted Saturday afternoon for First Lieutenant Herbert Bayless, 19, war hero and lifetime resident of Bakersfield, whose body has been returned from a burial plot near Blugein, Germany.

Reverend Hollister B. Miller will officate at funeral services to be held at Greenlawn Chapel at 1:30 p.m. A color guard of the Disabled American Veterans will participate in graveside rites which will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Born in Bakersfield, February 20, 1925, Lieutenant Bayless was graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1942, and was enrolled at Bakersfield College when he was called into the service in March, 1943.
He was high school student body president in 1942 and a member of the school board of commissioners. The commissioners' room has been named Bayless Hall in his honor.
He was also active on the high school debate, swimming and football teams. He died December 2, 1944.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Max Bayless, a twin sister, Charlotte, a brother, Max, Jr.; three nephews, Chris, Kurt and Dan, all of Bakersfield and several aunts and uncles.
