Benjamin R. Cofer, 67, of 120 Thirty-fourth street [Newport News, VA], died at 4:30 yesterday afternoon at Riverside hospital. He had been ill only a few hours.

A native of Isle of Wight county [VA], he had lived in Newport News fifty years. He was a merchant with an establishment at Thirty-fifth street and Washington avenue.

Mr. Cofer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Brooks [sic] Cofer; one daughter, Mrs. Herbert Warren [Helen Cofer Warren]; one son, Russell Cofer, of this city; five brothers, N. E. Cofer, Newport News; John W. Cofer, Russell C. Cofer, C. J. Cofer and Andrew Cofer, Smithfield [in Isle of Wight County, VA]; one sister Mrs. Elmo Batten, Smithfield; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at Caffee's funeral home, 3101 West avenue, at 3 Sunday afternoon by Dr. Floyd W. Putney, pastor of the First Baptist church. Interment will be in Greenlawn cemetary. The body will lie in state at Caffee's funeral chapel until hour of the funeral.
