Augustus Elmore Ellis was born April 26th, 1826, near Due West, South Carolina. He was the son of John Ely and Elizabeth Wright Ellis. He was one of seventeen children, all but one of whom lived to be grown. His early educational opportunities were fairly good. He labored on the farm more or less until he entered college. He graduated from Erskine College in 1845; after received as a student of theology on the 29th of March, 1845. He was licensed to preach by the Second Presbytery at Due West, Sept. 14, 1846.

Rev. Ellis labored for a time as a domestic missionary in Kentucky. In 1847, he became pastor of a small church in DeKalb Co., Georgia. Rev. Ellis was also the head of a flourishing school at this church.

Rev. Ellis married Miss Mary Ann Ellis December 23rd 1847. She was the daughter of John L. and Mahala Ellis, of Due West, S. C. Mary Ann was one of four sisters who married A. R. P. ministers. This union had four known children.

Rev. Augustus Elmore Ellis died November 1st 1855 at his father’s home while traveling to the Presbytery Synod at Cedar Springs. Leaving his wife, Mary Ann and four young children to grieve their loss. Mary Ann Ellis lived for the next 44 years, until she died April 2, 1899.
